Introduction
Welcome
This guide shows you how to deliver a safe, calm Biosun ear candling session and how to choose the right candle for each client.
It is written for massage therapists, naturopaths, beauty and wellness therapists, and anyone offering ear candling as part of a relaxation treatment. Biosun In Australia has 30 years of experience bringing these German-made candles to Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
Handmade in GermanyUntreated organic cotton and pure beeswax
Patented safety filterStops wax or residue entering the ear canal
10 to 12 minute burnOne candle per ear, each about 22 cm long
45 to 60 minute sessionConsultation, candles, rest and an optional massage
How to use this guideStart with safety and the consultation, then use the range pages to choose a candle with your client. The quick reference pages at the back are made for the treatment room.
Before every session
Safety first
If any of these apply, do not treat. Suggest the client sees their GP or an audiologist first, and ask at every booking, not just the first.
Do not treat if the client has
A perforated eardrum or grommets
An ear infection, discharge, pain or bleeding
Had ear surgery in the last 12 months
A cochlear implant
Sudden hearing loss, dizziness or unchecked tinnitus
An allergy to beeswax, honey or the essential oils
Take extra care
Hearing aids: remove before, refit once ears are clean and dry
Children: parent or guardian present and consenting; no Wellmotion
Pregnancy: offer Traditional
Scent sensitivity, asthma or epilepsy: check triggers and lean towards Traditional
Fire safety, every session
Tie back and cover hair, no hairsprayKeep a bowl of water within reachNever leave a lit candle unattendedStop at the printed marking line
Ear candling is a relaxation treatment. Never describe it as removing earwax or treating a medical condition.
Set-up
Preparing the space
A warm, quiet, dimly lit room makes the biggest difference. Set up before the client arrives so the consultation flows straight into treatment.
Treatment table and pillow for side-lying
Two clean towels: one for hair and shoulder, one for the ear
A pair of Biosun Ear Candles, plus a spare
Lighter or matches
Bowl of water to extinguish candles
Scissors
Tissues and cotton buds (outer ear only)
Intake and consent form with the safety questions
Optional: massage oil, a warm blanket and soft music
Mind the draughtTurn off fans and air conditioning vents that blow across the table. A draught makes the flame flicker and burn unevenly.
Five minutes that matter
The consultation
The right candle is the one that matches how your client wants to feel when they leave.
1
Check safetyRun through the safety questions and get consent before talking about aromas.
2
How are they arriving?"How are you feeling today, in your body and in your head?"
3
How do they want to leave?"Calm and sleepy, clear and energised, or lighter and brighter?"
4
Ask about scent"Earthy and herbal, fresh and green, or sweet and citrusy?"
5
Let them smellHold each unlit candle near them. The one they breathe in again is usually the one.
6
Confirm and explainName the candle and say why, using their own words back to them.
Record the choice and how the client felt on their card. Next visit, ask whether they want the same experience or something new.

The treatment
Step by step
One candle per ear, about 10 to 12 minutes each. Talk the client through each step before you do it.
1
Settle the clientRemove earrings, glasses and hearing aids. Client lies on their side, ear facing straight up.
2
Protect the hairTie long hair back. Lay a towel over hair and shoulder, leaving only the ear exposed.
3
Prepare the candleCheck it is undamaged. The safety filter end goes to the ear; you light the other end.
4
Light it away from the clientLight the top end and let the flame settle for a moment.
5
Place it gentlyRest the filtered end at the entrance of the ear canal. Never push. Hold it upright.
6
Check the sealSmoke should rise evenly from the top. If it escapes at the base, adjust the angle slightly.
The treatment, continued
Steps 7 to 12
7
Stay with itKeep one hand on the candle and check in quietly. Any heat or discomfort, remove it straight away.
8
Stop at the marking lineWhen the flame reaches the printed line, lift it straight up and extinguish it in water.
9
Clean the outer earWipe away any ash with a tissue. Never put a cotton bud inside the ear canal.
10
Let the ear restCover the ear with a warm towel and let the client rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
11
Treat the other sideClient turns over. Repeat steps 2 to 10 with the second candle.
12
Optional massageSlow circles along the jaw, around the ears and across the temples and forehead.
About candle residueThe residue inside a used candle is wax and cotton from the candle itself, not earwax. Never present it as something removed from the ear.
After the treatment
Closing and aftercare
Bring the client back slowly, then send them home with a few simple points.
Closing the sessionLet them sit up in their own time and offer a glass of water. Ask what they noticed, and note the candle and their response on their card. Check ears are dry before hearing aids go back in.
Aftercare for clients
Keep your ears warm today; a scarf or beanie helps
No swimming, and keep water out of your ears today
Rest, drink water and notice how you feel
See your GP if you notice pain, discharge or hearing changes
RebookingA course of 2 to 4 sessions works well, then a regular session as part of their self-care. Suggest next time's candle, or a new aroma to try.
Continuing at home? Always have a second person help, and try a Biosun Variety Pack.
